Every year since 1992, the 10th of October has been celebrated as World Mental Health day. The day aims to bring awareness to the importance of looking after our mental health, something that is overlooked all too often. Because of the stigma that is still attached to mental health, open conversations on the subject are few and far between. World Mental Health day provides both a reminder and a much needed opportunity to discuss the importance of mental health. In this blog, we’re going to look at ways you can incorporate positive mental health into your daily life.
Stop Criticising Yourself
This may sound like the oldest cliché in the book, and it seems to fit perfectly in the realm of “Easier said than done”. Advice like this might seem generic, but there’s a good reason that every mental health professional says this: it’s true. Overcoming self-criticism can be difficult, but the rewards are worth the effort. If you catch yourself being overly critical, say so out loud. Tell yourself that you’re being too hard on yourself, and that you are better than you give yourself credit for. Speaking out loud will make you believe these things more than saying them in your head, and soon, you’ll find that you cut across that criticism faster and faster each time.
Set Yourself Daily Goals
Every day, you should set yourself a small number of realistic goals. Set no more than five a day, or you risk setting yourself up for disappointment. What these goals are will depend on what it is that makes you happy. Meeting a friend, reading one chapter of a book, going for a walk, getting a project done at work, painting, whatever it is that makes you happy. Be sure to write these goals down, as this has been shown to make you ten times more likely to achieve them.
Take a Time Out
The mind is like a muscle, and just like a muscle, it needs a break. This doesn’t just apply to work, but to life in general. Even if you’re not doing anything particularly strenuous, your mind needs to take a break from the incessant information overload of the modern world. In addition to getting a proper night’s sleep, you need to unplug for a little bit each day. Some alone time where your mind can switch off even for a few minutes can have a majorly positive impact on your mental health.
Look After Your Physical Health
Physical health and mental health are intrinsically linked, and the deterioration of one will impact the other. Even if you don’t want to, it’s important to make sure you get enough sleep, three meals a day, exercise, and generally try to keep your body feeling fit. Failing to do so could lead to physical pain, which can be the beginning of a downward spiral. It can be easy to come up with excuses not to look after your physical health, especially if you are struggling with mental health, but taking care of one will help take care of the other.
